US President Donald Trump has taken center stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw, prompting fans to quickly identify the event as “cringeworthy” and awkward.
On Friday, what was meant to be a celebration of the 47-team tournament across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, turned into, what critics called, an over-the-top display dominated by Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Infantino faced widespread criticism for his conduct, particularly for awarding Trump a newly created FIFA “Peace Prize.”
The move sparked raucous debate among social media frequenters, was widely seen as pandering, and, according to numerous observers, marked the moment the internationally anticipated event went off kilter.
“The World Cup draw. It’s making me cringe,” one fan tweeted, blasting Infantino for using the heavily-televised event to gratify Trump. “It’s sickening.”

Ghana is interested in purchasing a floating nuclear power plant from Russia, Ghanaian Ambassador to Russian Koma Steem Jehu-Appiah told Sputnik.
"I know that our minister of energy was here last year and signed a corresponding agreement. I think this is innovative, and in a conversation with the minister of energy, he said that the country is interested.
So, Ghana could purchase such a nuclear power plant," the diplomat said when asked about the possibility of Ghana purchasing a floating nuclear power plant.
Russia and Ghana began cooperation in the field of nuclear energy after signing an intergovernmental agreement in 2015.
The agreement outlined plans for joint work in the areas of training specialists, building nuclear power plants and related infrastructure, and providing maintenance services.
